December 2007 - Scarves From The Heart

Welcome to SofThreads Charity Spotlight
January 2008

Ten years ago, Kathy Silverton planted a small seed. She nurtured and cared for her new venture, and in time, Stitches From the Heart bloomed to bring about a harvest she hardly anticipated.

Stitches From the Heart provides clothing and other articles to premature newborns, and helps others serve by providing supplies to senior citizens who desire to contribute but have limited funds.

With volunteers numbering over 12,000 over the years and having distributed over 437,000 items to more than 947 hospitals, Stitches from the Heart is successfully touching thousands of lives and contributing to a better community by bringing those in need and those with giving hearts together.

Stitches from the Heart is an IRS approved 501(c)(3) non-profit organization located in Santa Monica, CA, but anyone in the country can donate with knit or crocheted items or with financial donations which help to provide necessary supplies to senior citizens with fixed incomes who donate their hand made items. Visit Stitches from the Heart today to add your contribution to this successful and flourishing effort.

December 2007

As Shirley Heikkinen’s daughter and sister battled their cancers miles away from her reach, Shirley agonized over a way to alleviate her own feelings of helplessness to relieve the pains of her family. One night she resolved to knit scarves for cancer patients, called the St. Joseph's Regional Cancer Center the next morning, and Scarves from the Heart was born.
Scarves from the Heart’s Mission states that they strive to "provide cancer survivors with a scarf that can fill a need, be it the need for physical warmth that a scarf can offer, the need to know that someone cares which can be felt through the love that was knit or crocheted into each stitch, or the need for something to smile about.

Scarves from the Heart has since successfully donated over 300 scarves to multiple cancer centers in their local area. Their scarves’ origins range from next door neighbors to Australia and Israel. They are always in need of more scarves, and appreciate any donations you can offer. They are especially in frequent need of men’s scarves.

These scarves were donated by
a cancer survivor. Many of them
show an amazing use of small
amounts of yarn.
So if you think you can offer some time to knit or crochet a scarf with care for cancer patients in need of comfort, please visit Scarves From The Heart’s Guidelines, for specifications on the scarves you create.

From Shirley Heikkinen’s website: “...I have learned that one person really can make a difference. You too can make a difference, just by listening to your heart and doing what feels right. It really is as simple as listening to that still small voice when it speaks to you."

Thank you for taking time to learn more about Scarves from the Heart.
